A virtual youtuber (バ ー チ ャ ル ユ ー チ ュ ー バ ー, bācharu yūchūbā, female: virtual youtuber) or VTuber (ブ イ チ ュ ー バ ー, buichūbā, for "virtual YouTuber") is an entertainment broadcaster that uses a virtual avatar generated using software or 3D modeling and motion capture technology.

The phenomenon was born in Japan in the mid-2010s. The majority of VTubers are web videographers or streamers who use anime-inspired avatar designs. In 2020, there are more than 10,000 active VTuber.

Despite their name, virtual youtubers are not exclusive to YouTube but are also present on platforms like Niconico, Twitch and bilibili.

The term Backrooms refers to one or more places accessible by clipping off from reality. This place is considered a parallel dimension, mostly empty, usually divided into several «levels» or «floors» interconnected, using practically all the «liminal» aesthetic, that is to say spaces with characteristics such as large empty and repetitive rooms, giving a déjà vu feeling to anyone who would venture there. Some creations also include groups of survivors with dynamics adapted to the universe, although this is sometimes questioned because it takes the Backrooms away from their origins, the liminal aesthetic.
